A friend of mine is trying to figure out the serial number and year for his 150HP Mercury outboard. He thinks the year is probably somewhere roughly around 1978, but he can't say for sure.
According to an old page on Mercury's website, "The serial number tag is located on the SWIVEL BRACKET (port or starboard); or, check the INSTRUCTION PLATE, located between the thumb screws above the steering tube."
My friend says: "499-8709-06 is the number that's stamped on the swivel bracket. I called an online Mercury parts dealer and they told me that the serial number usually has a letter in it but never has any dashes in it. There's usually an ID plate above the steering tube, but it's missing on mine. I see the screw holes where I guess the plate was mounted once upon a time."
Is that number on the swivel bracket a part number, or something else? He's wondering if that's actually even the original swivel bracket for the engine, or if it was put together with parts from different engines. Anywhere else he can look for a serial number?
