"I have a Mariner 40 Hp Magnum

"I have a Mariner 40 Hp Magnum motor and need the serial number on it to order carb. rebuilding kit. I think its a 1992 model, but not for sure. I did find a serial number tag on the motor mount beside the tilt& trim that has the numbers 09700536 on it. But I am being told that it should have a letter in it. Is there any other place that I can look to get this info. and can anyone give me a year for this engine by the numbers above. Thanks"

"Thanks for all the rapid resp

"Thanks for all the rapid responses. I purchased the carb. kits about four years ago and gave them the numbers and both were less than $50.00. Now, the same dealer is trying to sell them for $63.50 each. They say I am not giving the right numbers. Is there anymore numbers I can give them other than this one stated in my first post for the correct kit. After 3 attempts, they keep saying its suppose to have a letter in it to match. Man, its tough to want to go fishing! Thanks again."

"Walter, yes it's a Yamaha

"Walter, yes it's a Yamaha built Mariner and parts are getting difficult to locate in some instances.

You are missing the first part of your model/serial number which should be "684" if this is a "C" model which the rest of your serial indicates. That would make it a 1981 model.

These were a well designed, well built motor, based on Yami's own model 15B built in the late 1970's - which is why parts are getting scarce.

Yami built the Mariners from parts that they had stopped using themself - so no, not a junk motor, but usually about 5-10 years "out of date" the day it rolled off the assembly line.

These were prolific models and some parts are still around (such as waterpump and carb kits) but almost no ignition components are still produced so something as simple as a busted charge coil can turn the motor into a 75 pound paperweight.

Because of that I would place the value on the motor quite low. If it was running it may be worth a couple hundred bucks (a gamble that it will keep running for a few more years).

Personally I would tempted to walk away from this particular motor unless it was given to me.."

Someone else can have the problem - don't need any more then I already have

One more question , if I may

Whats your general opinion of Suzuki 10/15 HP engines ?

"2 stroke or 4 stroke?

Suzu

"2 stroke or 4 stroke?

Suzuki is not overly prolific in North America but they did build the small Johnson 4 strokes for years.

Depending where you are, parts/service could be difficult to come by.

If you are looking at 2 stroke motors it's impossible to beat the performance, quality and durability of a 1986-on Merc 15 horse - one of the best small motors ever, ever built.

If you favour a 4 stroke you would be really hard pressed to find something better than Honda's 15 horse, although Merc's 15 4 stroke (built by Tohatsu) seems to be a decent motor as well - just a little heavy..."
