Serial # Missing From Drive, Need Water Pump

I can find no serial number on the actual drive leg as its been painted kinda thick and crusty with black antifouling paint by a previous owner. According to http://www.marineengine.com/mfr/mercruiser_models.html I see it should be "located on the upper drive shaft housing (starboard side or on the back of the housing)." Nada.

There is a metal number tag in nice condition on the upper part of the transom plate stating that serial number as OD405560. The boat is a 1991 model but I have no way of knowing if the drive leg is original to the boat.

Should I just get the water pump out and then worry about matching it? Is there some way to know these things, or should I just post pictures of it here after its out...?

Take a picture of the drive, a clear one and post it.
