New to this group, also new to having a boat. I am getting a skiboat with a merc engine, the engine has seized due to rust(this is from a boat repair shop).
Any ideas how to clean it up without having to replace the whole thing? One person has suggested using some trans fluid to loosen it up.. What do you all think? "

Why are they not fixing it first? I would be a little uneasy taking it.

" Chances are water got in the engine. Salvage the external parts and get a new base engine for it. There are Vortecs on the web ranging $2150 to $2800 depending if its a V6 or V8. Buy it yourself and have someone refit it for you if you can't do it ourself. Buying it yourself will save you some money on a shops's mark up. And they come with the same warranty as what a mechanic gives you. Save yourself some time, money, and agrevation, get a new base engine and reuse the parts from you old one. "
