I have a 4 hp twin cylinder Johnson outboard, age unknown,Model No BJ4RESR / Ser No B 8456985. Bought from Ebay and in really good condition. Ran perfectly all year, flushed and stored in garage over winter, come spring it had seized. Removed cylinder head, couple of taps on piston and running fine again, after replacing the head etc.
Problem now is that if left for couple of days it is seized . A couple of taps on the flywheel and it turns again. I do not think it is the cylinders as there was no corrosion when removing the cyl head. Any ideas out there what could be causing this problem?
Cheers, tmhsg

Since the lower unit is a snap to remove on that model, remove the lower unit the next time the engine locks up before doing anything else. THis will tell you if the momentary lock up is within the powerhead or the lower unit.

If the powerhead..... I doubt seriously if it would be a bearing failure but more so a problem of water entering the engine in a very small amount, just enough to glaze movable surfaces. In which case, if it were me I would remove the powerhead and install all new gaskets and seals to eliminate all possible entrys.

Note that my mention of seriously doubting a bearing failure means a bearing failure due to no external means...... water (external means) entering an area where a bearing exists could certainly result in a binding action. When replacing the gaskets, etc, all bearings should be inspected and replaced as needed.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:
