"Another question from the newbie, I took my boat out with a 1977 Merc. 110, 9.8hp, boat is a 14ft Jon boat, sure don't seem like its going full throttle even though I have the handle turned all the way up to fast. Seems like maybe only half throttle, checked linkage, its going all it can, but butterfly is hardly openning in the carb.I can move the lever on top of carb that controls butterfly, and open all the way. What gives? I don't see any parts missing, and am sure it should push the boat a heck of alot faster, my old 5hp Hiawatha did. Also it sure isnt reving up like others do. Any suggestions?"

Spark plugs good?
Fresh fuel?
Fuel pump good?
Pitch of prop correct for application?
Height of motor in relation to transom?


So many other potential issues here, check these first and we'll go from there.

"Have you reaching in there and opened the carb all the way while it was in gear and running? And if so, did the boat take off?

The butterfly should open all the way just as the throttle reaches wide open. If not, the linkage is screwed up.

I'm a idiot! you know the screw on the top of the throttle linkage? it was screwed way in so it was stopping me from turning the throttle all the way. DUH! But I had the wife and kids each kick me in the butt for ya both! I'm sure you'd want to if you were here. lol. Thanks again guys and sorry for being a dumba#*%"
