"Any help would be appreciated regarding the correct gap setting for points on a Sears/Mecury 15HP outboard motor. I believe it's a 1987 vintage, and the Sears part# is 225587151. Also, any suggestions to remove flywheel would be very helpful. Sears/Mecury offer special tools to remove flywheel (T2989 Flywheel Wedge and T2909 Knock-off Nut), but nobody carries these in stock). The sears manual for this motor is useless for pulling flywheel and points gap. Many forums generally recommend a harmonic balancer puller, but holes in my flywheel aren't threaded excluding use of this tool... Thank you, DC"

"My original plan was to purchase parts to repair the pull rope and spindle assembly which broke. I plugged in the model number in Sears parts site (http://www3.sears.com) and it also listed a tune-up kit that included breaker points and condenser. Realizing the motor is getting old and parts are becoming rare, I bought tune-up kit and other parts and received them. I also purchase a manual in the past, and it covers spark plug gap, but says nothing about points gap. So now I'm stuck unless I measure the gap on current points ... once I figure out how to remove the flywheel (Sear no longer offers the tools designed to remove flywheel). I didn't know the motor mfg year, but the Mercruiser site (http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectSerailRange.asp?doc_nbr=15+H%2EP%2E+%281987 %29) says it's a 1987, maybe this is incorrect. Thanks for any feedback!"
