Sea strainer

I am not getting good water pick up through my alpha 1 drive. I have read that a sea water strainer is the way to go. I am wondering what brand would be good to buy? The engine is a Merc 350 mpi horizon. Any info would be great, thanks!

My mechanic told me that he was unable to get a good prime while trying to run the engine off the hose. In the water it does fine. He suggested a sea water strainer system with thru hull pick up. Maybe I have got some bad info, any thoughts on what I could do? Thanks again I appreciate any help I can get.
 
Has the impeller been examined/replaced.On the hose ,turn on the water, make sure the muffs seal properly, start engine.
what he meant was a engine driven pump, fed thru a strainer, seacock, and thru hull like they have for fresh water cooled systems. The drive still requires a pump to move water thru it cooling the oil.

Yes the impeller was just changed. I believe my engine is fresh water cooled.

I'd say he has a problem w/the water pressure going to the muffs...insufficient pressure, hose too small or a kink in the hose.
