Sea ray 100 hard to start

Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my outboard not wanting to start all the time.

1988 Sea Ray Seville 16’ bow rider.
powered by a Sea Ray 100 (actually a Merc)

so sometimes it starts up no problem and other times it acts as if the batteries are dead. When turning flywheel by hand it’s met with great resistance. After tinkering with stuff for awhile it will turn over and run as Ling as I do not shut it off it will run all day.

Few things I did after reading others posts.

Removed spark plugs one at a time and turned by hand.
resistance got lower and lower as I removed plugs.
with all four plugs removed it will turn over how it should.

removed LU and it started right up but I did not find any issues here. Oil is good in lower unit. Replaced the impeller and gaskets etc. later I dropped lower unit again and it still wouldn’t start.

The previous owner had the starter “rebuilt” right before the sale, he even commented saying if it gives you any issues let me know I have a warranty.

the stator was replaced last year by the previous owner also.

I plan on replacing all battery cables with brand new.

i do not have compression check gauge. But like I said when it does start it runs great.
Please help or point me in the right direction!
Thanks in advance,

-Joe

Those starters are elegantly easy to take apart for inspection and an ohm check.-------I would do that to determine if it actually is a starter problem.---------Then again some folks would run out and by a new one only to say---" still the same issues "-----You decide.

I thought about replacing the starter but I keep going back and forth due to the fact I cannot pull start the engine with starter not engaged obviously so I figured I have a motor or drive issue. However I have a meter and time lol

You are stating that with sparkplugs out it turns easily.-----That would indicate ( to me at least ) that nothing is binding on the motor.----Some will argue , but those starters are easy to diagnose.-----If you know the starter is bad you can shop with confidence for a new one.

Rebuild the starter. Not hard to do. Sand the commutator shiny with fine sandpaper, oil the bearings, and reassemble. Usually makes them work like new.
