scrapping barnacls saves how much

1. Money for gas2. Engine strain3. Capts nervesI had a lot on struts, shafts, rudders, tabs. What's a good paint for the ss and bronze. Now I know why the PO had them painted in NE area.

yes, yes, yes

here's one view to give you a feel....say the barnicle growth only doubles the surface area of the hull. That's going to cause twice the friction (at least) to move the hull at a given speed....so the engine is going to burn a lot more more to maintain that speed...how much extra fuel is used is a function of how fast you want to go.

I've had decent success using the bottom paint mfg's recommendations for painting the running gear. There's also a 'new' product - can't remember the name, but it has to be dealer applied, not owner applied. Not cheap and somewhat labor intensive...may wanna check the www to see if there is enough longevity data to consider.

Prop-speed and there is another one out now as well. A bit cheaper. They do last longer, but the $ savings might be tough to justify.

Dave - have you used prop speed? I've had my boat hauled this year and held my breath and did a little more scraping this past weekend.

I was thinking of the prop speed (shield?) for next season but understand the application is a bit tricky.

after drooling over propspeed diy videos (looks like a great but costly product) I found this... since i do usally run my boat one a week i think $25 vs $400 makes more sense. [h=1]Pettit Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier[/h]

Barnacles make enough difference that a few years back I thought I had a major problem and it was fouling of the outdrive. Barnacles are terrible.

I'm glad the upper Chesapeake Bay is mostly fresh water. I usually just get a few barnacles on the shafts and the metal intake screens for the engines.

Not this year!

We got thousands of the little b*st*rds on my boat, so many that I ended the seaon a month early--no fun running a boat that feels like it's dragging another behind it and is vibrating like crazy!

Jeff

PS: I'll post of photo of thos mess next week.

Jeff, I use ablative paint with Bio-boost and had no problem. Of course running my boat on a regular basis helps with not having barnacle issues. Some of the slip slugs around me have barnacles but that is to be expected.

Good point. Lousy weather and wifey issues reduced our running time this year, but EVERYONE'S boat in our area is infected with the little b*st*rds! See photos of my boat.

Wow, you did have a few up there! I bet Billy and Sally's boat must be covered! The whole time I was at the Cove, I think I saw that boat go out once or twice! Is Joe Richtie still there? He bought Rolland's Bayliner motor yacht.

Joe is eternal! Rollie sold the trawler he bought after selling Joe his old boat, which Joe still has.

Jeff

PS: New owner has sold out nearly every slip. Good dude that people like and can depend on.

I'm glad to hear the marina is doing well. I liked the people but hated dealing with the skinny water and waiting on tides to come in or out from the Elk. The kids needed more activities and I like having the option of hanging at the pool.

WOW! What type/brand of bottom paint did you use? I want to make sure I never use it.

ALL of the boats in my area look like this. It's this weird summer we had. Also, squre MILES of underwater grass just...disappeared. Gone.

Weird.

Jeff

You got the weird part right...the farm pond i fish in after work had almost 18" of water evaporate out of it, as did the neighboring ponds - none of the locals remember that much loss in a summer...and the creek we camp at down on the Rappahanock had more grass in it than in the past 22 years...

Clean water act is responsible for this problem. Ship captains used to sail their boats through polluted
NY harbor just to kill off shipworms and barnacles.

Maybe that's where our grass went!

Jeff,

Although not a great picture of my bottom, but only had a few barnacles on the running gear. This picture was after the strom and tidal surge that came right up to my boat.Veggas Hurricane-2012-2.jpg

..."..not a great picture of my bottom.."

Thank goodness!

Glad to hear your boat didn't float of the blocks (as many did up north). The water didn't rise above normal at the Cove.
