Scalling and water temperture V6

"Earlier I posted a question regarding water temperture V6 merc.
I was having a slighte over heating issue after long runs. After coming to a idle engine would heat up, or after running hard.
New impeller was installed , still same issue. Pulled the thermostat and found it to be very crusty with scale...Replaced it, and pulled the water lines coming into and out of the Thermostat housing.. The housing was plugged with scale like crazy, water flow was down by 50% was shocking...reduced to a finger hole of in and out water channel.
So now going to replace the Thermostat housing and pull the water pump to inspect it for blockage.
The port water line going to the riser was so much hotter than the starboard one from the stat housing.
Has any one come across a good winter stablizer that prevents scaling and is not a enviormental issue.
I am hoping that the housing replacement will solve my temp issue. A acid bath in the fall before storage was suggested to clean the engine up from scale.

Thoughts comments....?

"Salt neutralizer may help. I

"Salt neutralizer may help. If you don't replace the check ball valves, clean them out. If there is scale in the T'stat you can bet that the risers and manifolds are full of it. Pull them and acid wash for 90 min. in muriatic acid and scrub with tube brush. Check both flappers while it is apart."

"you did not mention age of en

"you did not mention age of engine. scaling in exhaust elbows can cause flow problems. may be time to replace manifolds, and risers. down here they are good for 3-5 years. more in your water. I have cleaned manifolds with acid, but never ran it through the engine. be careful with that. better idea is take manifolds, risers to radiator shop. have them put in their tank."

"the engine is a 1994, I was w

"the engine is a 1994, I was wondering if it is worth pulling the risers, it is obvious that the port riser and exshaust is hotter then the starboard... would this mean riser is plugged..? As i mentioned the line going to the port riser was a lot hotter than the starboard line out.

thanks."

"Scott:

"take manifolds, risers to radiator shop. have them put in their tank".

Excellent advice. They can boil them and clean them ultrasonically at the same time--much safer than acid dipping."

Is acid dipping different from

Is acid dipping different from mixing acid with water and doing a flush. That sits over night in the water passages and then is flushed out with the the disolved scaling...? or are we talking about two different thing here. I understand the removal of riser and exhaust manifolds.

"definately worth your time. s

"definately worth your time. should give you an indication of condition, and only costs the price of gaskets, parts wise. they are a few dollars here. thats about 50 canadian maybe? (just kidding) and as Guy said, if the thermo. housing is scaled, you can bet the manifolds/elbows are."

"sorry, running behind again.

"sorry, running behind again. (slow typer) would not recommend letting acid solution set in engine overnite."

great info everybody thanks ..

great info everybody thanks ...will have the risers pulled and take a look...if bad will do the manifolds and risers at a rad shop for a good cleaning.

"You may want to think about c

"You may want to think about converting to a full FWC system to get rid of salt water in your engine, thermostat, manifolds, etc.
It will still dump overboard thru your elbows, but everything else will be protected from scale and rust, including your exhaust manifolds.

"If the port riser was very mu

"If the port riser was very much hotter than the starboard, CHECK BOTH flappers since they can only take so much heat--the edges that seal the "Y" pipe from backwash are rubber and can distort under intense heat. Your engine will be subject to backwash entering the engine via the riser, manifold and thru the valves. You don't want that one bit."
