"Well..I got the overheating problem corrected(bad thermostat) . Again it is a 71 OMC V6 with electric shift. After the engine gets warm there is a grinding sound that starts in the rear of the engine. It gets bad enough that it completely stops the engine. When the engine stops..the steering wheel jerks to the point of not being able to hold it. This happens with the outdrive in the up and down position. Once the engine cools a bit,,it frees back up..runs till it gets warm..then repeats. Any clues?

Should have built a raft

"Eugene,

"Eugene,

I am still scratching my head about the warming up and grinding. In the meantime, you indicate that the grinding happens if the drive is up or down. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT RUN the engine with the Drive in the UP POSITION! It is bad for the Drive on a couple of levels. I will continue thinking about the grinding, just wanted to pipe in the Drive in the Up Position."

Thanks for the tip...I ran the drive up after everything seemed to sieze up to see if maybe the drive had locked up. But the noise is def in the rear of the engine. After this grinding stops the engine..it wont even roll over.Hit the key several time it starts freeing up..then when its cool it fires right up

"Since no one but myself have

"Since no one but myself have responded yet, there is one thing between your Drive and the Engine. That would be the Intermediate Housing which is connected to the Engine but is not part of the Engine. It has a Drive Shaft and an Oil Resevoir. It seldom fails, but I think in your case you need to check it out. I have included a picture of my Intermediate with some crude arrows pointing out the Fill and Drain Plugs. I have since finished it so it looks a lot nicer now. I would suggest looking up the procedure for draining the Intermediate or at least checking the Fluid Level. If Metal is grinding it could very well show up in the Oil. Hopefully others will chime in here that have done this, because I have not. My thoughts would be the problem is there or the Ball Gear Drive Shaft and not in your engine.

Sounds like you have hit on the problem area. I did notice some oil in the bottom of the boat and could find no leaks on the engine. Is this picture taken with the housing still attached to the engine in the boat? Thanks for all the help.

"The only other thing I though

"The only other thing I thought of is the grease zerk on the INSIDE of the boat. It is for the Gimbel shaft. I would not have found mine save for the manual I bought. I went looking for it, and sure enough...there it was, on the right side of the housing. IT STILL HAD PAINT COVERING IT!!!!!! I scratched the paint off, and squirted it about 5 or 7 times.
That picture was a great help. So far, in the manual, I havent got to , or seen the part about filling the intermediate housing with oil. I'm off to check that now. The drive has been running flawless lately. I have a 65 SUE-13 SU ."

the 71 intermediate case did n

the 71 intermediate case did not have a drain plug for that oil resevoir. u have to use an oil pump to get out what you can.i have replaced those shaft bearings before they can come out very dry.
