me and my fother in law have been working with his 2.3L ford engine for a while now and cant seem to figure it out. hope that someone can help.

The problem we are having is that the boat will start and run just fine and then at about 3000rpm it just stops and floods itself like it lost fire for just a sec but back off the throttle and hammer it again and it will go until it hits 3000rpm again, same thing all day long most of the time. Sometimes it will get better and not cut out until you get to 4500 or 5000 and sometimes it wont even get to 2500. we just cant figure it out.

We have already replaced the coil and the points and we know that its in the firing system because it will loose fire when it happens but we just cant seem to narrow it down.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

How do you know that is loosing fire??? Go to autozone or any local parts store and get one of the spark testers that go between the spark plug and the plug wire to unsure that is your problem. I would check and see if the flapper valve is missing in your exhaust, it may have came off and is in the exhaust bellows or further down, restricting exhaust flow and creating to much back pressure , Or it may be a high speed circuit in your carb that is not adjusted properly . Other then that , make sure your points are adjusted and gaped properly, and the dwell is set.

already checked all that and i have a spark tester thats how we found out that it loosing fire. its been doing this for about a year, weve tried all that we can think of.

I had a similar dilema. I thought I had an obstruction in my carb but it turns out I had a bad connection on the coil wire.
