running rich! 1972 25hp

i have a 1972 25hp evinrude that i just rebuilt carb on. I have it set per the setting that joe reeves advised me so it is adjusted right. for some reason it is ruuning too rich. the mixture is right....50:1. i have it gapped at .033 so i dont know what else it could be. the only reason i say it is running rich is when you pull the plugs the plugs themselves are drenched in oil and if i put new plugs in it runs like a time for about 4 hours then starts to idle funny like before............miss idling and shutting off randomly at idle and acting like it flooded but it doesnt seem to be. motor is in great shape but just wanna get it right so i can take my son out on it without worrying about it kickin out on me and not being able to start it. please help. thanks.

Re: running rich!

You have set the idle mixture screw to 1½ turns out from gently seated and then adjusted it to its best position as described in Joe's instructions ?

First thoughts are that it is flooding due to the float valve not controlling the fuel level properly. Sticky needle or float, worn needle, dirt in needle valve, incorrecdtly adjusted float etc etc.

But if really was flooding you probably would not have been able to follow Joe's instructions

I think I'd check out the needle valve and float even so.

Have you checked for good sparks. Nothing is going to work if you dont have good sparks.
