"1970 115hp mercury. I recently put this motor on my boat. Got throttle and shift cables secured by the barrel holders all in place. Now, when I first started it I used the choke button on the mercontrol. She starts right up but doesn't slow down. I think I read that people call this a runaway situation. What should I do to get a lower rpm at idle? Do I need to adjust the barrels on the throttle cable should I slow down the spark plug advance? I see there is an idle set screw that buts up against the distributor. I haven't let it run more than 3 sec's like this. How do i calm her down at start up?"

"Jace, The position of the throttle barrel should force the throttle closed, and have some preload on it. So remove the throttle cable barrel from its holder, push the throttle closed (up against the idle stop screw), adjust the barrel to fit into its holder, and then turn the barrel a turn or two to make it a tighter fit. if you are already up against the idle stop screw, and the motor still runs too fast, you have a link and synch problem. I recommend you get some kind of manual and adjust idle and max timing and carb synch per specs."
