Running Electric Start with no Battery

So my '98 6hp has electric start. The guy I bought it from used it in a fishing boat, used the electric start, and had it hooked up to a battery.

Since I am going to use it in an inflatable dinghy, I will not be using a battery. I went ahead and took off the battery cables from under the cowl. Is there anything else I need to disconnect so the charging system won't get damaged?

Thanks. I believe this is the rectifiyer?

Looked at a parts schematic and it looks like it had three terminals.

This link I found, http://books.google.com/books?id=hB...AEdsJUpTkn06bW_h7WFJn8elQ#v=onepage&q&f=false

said that you just need to disconnect the stator wires from the rectifiyer, which I assume those red wires are from the stator?

I disconnected both red wires and wrapped in electrical tape. So I should be good to go?

You need to remove one of the wires coming from the stator--not the wire going to the battery. (Think about it--what's the difference doing it that way compared to running without the battery?)

PS: Frankly, I'd use a lawn mower battery (30 bucks at Wal Mart) to start the thing--why bust your, ah, chops? It's all you need. Hell; I start my 70 hp triple with one.

I completely removed the wires that went outside the cowling to the battery.

I have a service manual on order, but it hasn't shipped let. Which wire on the rectifier comes from the stator?

I'd use a battery....but in a dinghy stored on my boats swim platform would be a PITA.
