The procedure I used for my '75, 115 Johnnie, 50:1 twin vertical carbs, was to pull the fuel line at the tank, run at idle. Just when the engine changes speed, pull the choke to kill it and turn off the ignition. It would drip black oil out the prop vent for several days. Never had a problem and it had set up for over a year on two occasions and would strat right up. I guess the chocking it before it ran totally out of gas was the key. At about 40 years of age, I pulled the carbs and found them clean and free of varnish. However, I did use 4+2 and Seafoam on a regular, but not continious basis. Love my old Johnnie, it never let me down.
The problem I had with a previous '76, 35 Rude was that, if the carb was left full for over a month, the float valve would stick and no amount of tapping would free it.
