"It's time to replace the 'ole, original teleflex steering cable on my Johnson 1985 120 HP.

Unfortunately, the motor has to come off the transom to get this job done ( I have a 20' walk around Grady White ).

The Shop Manual does not go into detail about this project, so I would appreciate a little advice.

I also think it wise to R/R the tilt tube too - the tilt is very 'sticky' from this.

Where do I start, and where are the 'bitchy parts' of the project ? Any tricks i.e. to get the tilt tube out of the bracket ( I was thinking - maybe a pipe the same size diameter as the tube - hit lightly w/ a hammer? )

Any special installing / lubing for the new cable ?

Thx,

Alan ( [email protected] )"

" While the outboard is hangin

" While the outboard is hanging on a hoist behind the boat, I use an air-driven hammer with a long drift to remove the old cable. Of course the 1-1/8" jam nut must be fully backed off. Reaming out the tilt tube usually cleans it up. No reamer? Try a 5/8" drill bit (long one). The new cables need an adapter to fit into the old helms. Grease the hell out of the new cable before inserting it into the cleaned-up tilt tube. "

" Alan,

" Alan,

I've never had to ream to get one out, but if it's stuck, twisting the ram by the tip w/ a wrench or screw-driver through the hole helps quite a bit. I've also heard that it's sometimes easier to remove the tilt tube from the OB in a real desperate situation.

" If you are going through the trouble to remove the motor, you might as well spend a few more bucks and replace the tube with a new stainless steel one. Might as well get the new bushing while you're at it. You won't regret it. "
