Rookie needs help Johnson 15HP

"Thanks for reading. I recently purchased a 14' Johnboat with a 15HP Johnson. Likely 2002. Since it sat for years without use, it had to be rebuilt. Ran great for first 10 hours. Now have some strange problems.
1. No longer have neutral or reverse. Yup, it will only start in forward position which means I have to be ready to start moving. Tricky in marinas!
2. Don't seem to have the power it once had after rebuild. Engine revs well but I can sense that it's not getting all of the powere it should.

Any help would be appreciated. Be advised, I;m new to this and not technical."

"What type of rebuild did you do. Full Engine overhaul, or what. First thing i would have done would to be of rebuilt carbs and then tried to do a compression test."

"I actually took the boat back the the marine shop today. turns out the first problem is resolved with replacing the missng screw in the shift rod.
I can't see how, but he says this might make the difference the power as well."

"Well the shiftrod has specific areas where it will or will not shift into gear. That missing screw may have made it so that it wouldn't lock into gear, i would assume. I don't know how much leeway it was with it engaging or not engaging, but it may be a small amount of space which could have thrown it out of wack with positioning the shift rod. Sorry if it sounds confusing."

"since u have a shop ,evidently close by,.....i am just assuming,they may have done the overhaul,OR,know who did(off duty tech,etc)..therefore,...see if u cant wk thru them,to resolve any ,IMMEDIATE,probs u may have..............u cant go back 9 mos ltr and expect free service repair,,etc....but.....i think,u r on the right trk,taking it in."

an 02--------that has the only prob of being (sat-up) a few yrs,..does NOT need to be rebuilt....those eng's,all the way back to 1980,have been an absolute perfect lil motor...i could sell them all day if i had them...
i suspect,or,presume,..the rebuild u may be speaking of,is carb,tune up etc.....which is justified,for sure......"
