Hello everyone, new guy here and I am in the process of reassembling my 1983 evinrude 70. I have assembled a few four stroke jeep engines( no roller bearings) before but not a two stroke outboard. Some background on the engine: my previous evrinrude 70 had the bottom carb clog up on my way back in from the beach one day, Im sure you guys can figure out how that ended. Tiny piece of hose got stuck in the float valve, now I am fanatical about changing out fuel hoses. Recently I bought an engine with a blown lower unit to take the power head off ( the engine I am assembling now) and it was all good except the lower and upper crank seals were going bad. Got it apart no problem everything looked ok, put the new seals on without a hitch.
Once it came time to reassemble I got stumped with these rod caps; now that I think about it I didn't really need to remove the crank but oh well. Since it was my first time putting an outboard rod together I thought I should assemble the rods on the bench to get the feel of it. One is together and I can run my finger nail up and down the outside without them catching. However, on the inside on the bearing surface my finger nail catches in the groove. Is this because they need to be put together on the crank or is there something wrong with these rods?
