"Been reading the posts on her

"Been reading the posts on here over the past few months and there is a lot on carbs and plugs. I am looking to do some preventive work on the twins. I have owned the 29 blackfin for almost a year and put 20 hours on the motors since purchase. My summer was cut short after the boat was hit. I don't know the last time the plugs were changed. What plugs do you recommend for the crusader 454/350HP? To avoid missing any time on the water next year, should I rebuild the Rochesters or replace with the Edelbrock's? If replacing, is it plug and play?

Thanx guys, the education on here reading posts is remarkable!"

"I have the AC-MR-44T spark plugs, and it's working fine with my Rochester Quadrajet Carburator. With new plugs, if it's running fine I will keep my Rochester Carb. Very easy and inexpensive to rebuilt if needed. I do own a Chris-Craft Amerosport 333, 1987. and love'd it."

"rebuilt one of the 2, used National Carburators out of Jacksonville, FL. Plan to send the other one to them in next few months. Edelbrock is not and exact bolt on from what i remember, not a big deal to correct however.

spark plugs, ask crusader, believe they recommend NGK, forget the model. It will drive you crazy trying to x refenence the engine on the web site, you will get one plug, then x ref the ac plug and you will get another one, then x ref the Champion RV8 plug and you will get yet another one.

answer is either the AC Delco , Champion RV8 or what ever NGK plug that crusader recommends."

"If that's a Quadra-Jet, the only replacement option you have are Holley Spread-Bore marine carbs. The Edelbrocks will not fit.

The quadrajet is the only one

The quadrajet is the only one I found that will fit for this Crusader 7.4L 350. by Thermo Electron Corp. (1987).

"Around our marina, with many fishing charter boats, captains are changing over to Edelbrocks' 1409/1410 from Quad4mv's. Much better gas mileage, starting, overall performance. Not hard to change over at all (watch the head room)- need spread bore spacer (talk with the Edelbrock tech).
Spark plugs - marine tech's recommending Bosch 7972's for older 5.7L/350 crusaders - do not load up as fast when running long no wake times."

Holley also makes a marine spread-bore carb that fits a Q-jey intake.

I replaced my carbs with the E

I replaced my carbs with the Edelbrock 6oocfm marine performer carbs. Easy starts and much better milege on twin 350 Crusaders. Will need adaptor spacers check your deck clearance. Spacer will add about an inch. Plug and play. Easy to tune. DVD included.

"MR43T is the better plug, off

"MR43T is the better plug, offering both lower heat range and nickle plating for rust resistance. I run Carter/Edle. square bores on the spread bore manifolds, btw. I do use an alumimum 12 deg wedge that accomodates both sides, just fine, no vacuum leaks. Nothing against the stock carbs, but the out of the box edle. get you sig. fuel savings."

Must correct my earlier statem

Must correct my earlier statement: Edelbrock sells an adapter to mount their 1409 on a Quadrajet intake. Sorry.

"I noticed that NGK now recommends their projected nose plug for the carbureted Crusader Big Blocks, but none of the other Marinizers BBCs; anybody have any insight into why?"

My local hot rod shop quoted m

My local hot rod shop quoted me $350 for the 1409 carb and $30 for the adapter.

Does that sound about right? I see them in the web for ~$330.

Summit racing online wants 335

Summit racing online wants 335.00 for the 1409 600cfm and 329.00 for the 1410 the 750cfm.

Amazon.com sold me my 1409 for $303. You don't need the larger one unless you're power mad (and have lots of gas money!)

All of the 1409's I see on

All of the 1409's I see online are electric choke and I have manual choke Qjets now. THe boat is a 91 Wellcraft 3300 Coastal w/ twin 454/350

Should I stay with manual or try and incorporate electric choke some how (that makes me nervous)

Edlebrock makes a reference to a manual but it's not clear how to order them from Jegs or the like. Amazon only lists electric choke for $339

"The electric choke wiring is

"The electric choke wiring is easy. It's only one wire, and goes to the switched 12V line. Such as the + of the coil on a standard ignition, or the alternator SW 12 line (if used)."

"check west marine, expensive

"check west marine, expensive but they might have the manual choke, makes for easier swapover if your going apples for apples"

"I bought a 1409 on eBay with a manual choke, so they certainly make them. That said, I recommend you go with the electric choke. Very easy to wire up and it's pretty reliable in operation.

"Jeff,

"Jeff,

My electric chokes are zip tied OPEN and the wires are zipped tied to the fuel line to keep them out of the way. I am thinking I might wire them up this fall ... That said, I am looking for a 12V switched source nearby. Any you can point me to?"

Edelbrock's install manual

Edelbrock's install manual states:

"Electric choke: Connect the red choke wire to a 12 volt positive (+) source that is activated by the ignition switch (Not the coil or alternator; see Fig. 7)."

I'd be inclined to wire it thru a relay activated by the IGN circuit.

"Just trying to keep everybody

"Just trying to keep everybody on track.

My hunch is Edelbrock has seen some issues between the choke coil - an inductor - and some ignition systems - another inductor. Hence, their warnings.

As long as the wiring is adequate, and the ignition functions properly, probably no harm in going that route."

"Well Gang....That is good to

"Well Gang....That is good to know. I never had a manual for these carbs as they were part of the vessel at time of purchase. Even then they were not wired in. As part of the 12V work this winter, I will go the relay route and keep it up on the bridge. I don't know how many relays I may have access to that won't spark on contact after a while"

"re: the hookup on the electri

"re: the hookup on the electric choke ,usually you can find a 12 volt source on the alternator that is hot only with motor running . That way the choke doesn't open up with the key on ,engine off [radio, other accessories on with the motor not running], it only activates the choke when the motor is running ,ensuring a clean cold crank"
