Risers amp Elbow Gaskets

I just received the new risers

I just received the new risers and exhaust elbows for my Crusader 454's. The Osco tech said I must use the one hole gasket between the riser and elbow to keep the riser full of water. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Why would they design the parts with 4 slots for water to run through if they want you to block off three? Can anyone explain this to me?

"Ayuh,....

It's for adaptability between various different applications........"

"That's why you use the OE

"That's why you use the OEM gasket. It is a graphite surface which is a much better sealant and there are no questions regarding fit. FYI, Crusader gaskets all have the four open slots. I can't answer why they would be any other way."

"Thanks for the input Rick, bu

"Thanks for the input Rick, but you're off the mark on this one. The place that I bought the Osco parts also sell OEM Crusader parts and they also have a one hole gasket between the top of the riser and the elbow. The single slot measures 1 1/8" x 1/2". It doesn't seem big enough by it self to allow enough water to pass through."

"John,

My apology, that&#

"John,

My apology, that's my fault for assuming you have center riser manifolds. You obviously have the older log type.

I'm not a big fan of Osco, they are notorious for selling gasket kits with several different gaskets in it and not telling the owner which ones to use on which applications. Like you, they are left guessing.

Rick"

"The "slots" are merel

"The "slots" are merely holes in the casting to allow the sand cores to be removed--they have no effect on cooling. The one hole gasket eventually will have holes in it at these slots do to erosion of the gasket, but they aren't needed.

Trust me on this! Been around that block several times now.

"IS it necessary to remove the paint on the mating surfaces on new manifolds at the exhaust ports, and elbow (early type) areas? Will this inhibit a godd seal ?"

"No problem. But DON'T us

"No problem. But DON'T use a silicone gasket sealer! It will glob up, fall off inside, and plug up the little holes at the end of the risers.

Jeff"

Maybe it's just Me,....
I always drag a Flat File across the face,+ see just How Flat they are,......

I bought some GLMs that Weren't......."

"You never realize how heavy all that STUFF is until you carry it back to the boat, lift it 12 feet in the air on a ladder and then place it in position for assembly. I am on the home stretch with the heads and manifolds.

Does any one think I need to replace the risers on the other engine. Those are 3" elbows and the repaired side is now going to be 4". This project as a do it yourself deal cost about 2 grand. I could only imagine if it was done by a shop. 5 Weekends JUST to remove the 2 manifolds.!"

Ayuh,... How long before they're Due,..??
If they've got a few years on them,...
I'd probably swap'em out....

Ayuh,.... Gives ya a Whole New Prespective on the guys that do this stuff Daily Don't It,..??"
