"Twin 1988 454 Crusders FWC. Yesterday when doing a scan with infared temp gun noticed the port riser/elbow and exhaust hose behind it, on starboard engine was very hot. Temp at idle was 180+ on the riser/elbow and 210+ degrees on exhaust hose. Temps were taken at dock at idle after about a 20 minute run to make sure everything looked OK after changing coolant. If increase RPM the temp goes down quickly to 170-180. Note the main engine temp is fine at 150-160, it is just the temp I am getting on the laser gun at this elbow/riser. Also risers and elbows are new last year. Impeller is new and seems to be pumping good water, the starboard side riser and elbow of this engine are at about 130-150.

Pulled RW supply hose to the riser and getting good flow. Thinking must be a blockage somehow in the riser or elbow channels?? They are only 1 year old though. Guess I should pull and check out.

Any other suggestions?? Thanks

"Yes, pull it and check out.

"Yes, pull it and check out. There could be some scale blocking the port."

"Right. If the water can'

"Right. If the water can't flow through one side, the other side gets more water. The starved side has got to heat up.

"I had a similiar problem in 2

"I had a similiar problem in 2002 with my 1983 Crusader Model 350 454 CID. I spoke with Crusader and they had me check the flow coming from the thermostat box. I measured 4 gallons per minute. They told me it should be 12 gallons per minute. After replacing the pump I did get the 12 gallons per minute although the difference out the exaust pipe was not visibly noticable. I suggest you measure the flow. If it is low, trace down why. One thing to look for is an obstruction in the through hull fitting since it is an older boat. Another problem could be an air leak on the suction side of the pump. I had a crack in the lip of the raw water strainer one time.

Good Luck

Chuck"
