"I just had my 1993 4.3 FWC in the shop because of elevated temps when at higher rpms... the shop took off the risers and cleaned them, but did say I should replace them in a year or so... do i have to worry about other damage it could cause since they were only cleaned and not replaced?"

Cleaning the manifolds and risers are never a guaranty against failure that is why it is recommended that you replace both with new.

The marina mech. gave you an estimate of their useful life. Go with it for now. On the other hand, waiting too long is a gamble that you have to ask yourself if you are willing to take it. Maintenance is a part of boat ownership; pay some now or pay alot later."

"re: potential damage. water in cyls. = destroyed exhaust valves, possible bent rods, head gasket problems, maybe wreck an engine. (salt water in engine not good) that enough? replace the manifolds and risers."

so do you think i should get them replaced right away or will it be ok to run like that until next season? is it risky to run with the risers like that at all even if it was just done?

"Scott, Had the same issue with my 97 4.3 mercs earlier this summer. Mechanic said the same thing. I put in new ones then. If you're going to have to spend the money in 6 months anyways, why not just do it now and have some peace of mind? My question - is this the first change of manifolds for your engine? 14 years is a heck of a long time for original manifolds to last. 6 to 7 years is usually about the time to change manifolds/risers. maybe your going to your third set?"

"Lee, yeah that very well could be the case.. I've only owned the boat for a year so it may have been done once or even twice before... who knows. I'll bump it to the top of the list. I wonder why the mechanic wouldnt try and upsell me to put new ones in when he had them off? Maybe he was hoping I'd let it go too long so something major would happen then I'd come back to him to fix."

He sounds like an honest mechanic to me. Otherwise he would have sold you new heads to go with the mans. and risers before you left the lot. Try to see the positive in people first; the negative will find you without any help.
