Revese grinding

I have a 1998 40 hp elpto tracker force by mercury ser#oe331450 i put a new impeller lower gear oil and just a general tune-up.The boat ran fine every time i took it out let my nephew use the boat big mistake. He came back with boat and said i think you need to adjust something. A month later put boat in and went to back off trailer and revese sounded like its grinding in gear and shaking like a dog pooping peach seeds it moves in reverse but sounds gnarly forward gets right up on plane and strolls i'm scratching my head. did he knock something aloose or did i not just line everything up right with impeller swap thanks for any help its appreciated

Sounds like the shift cable needs readjusting.

Yeah it makes sense because throttle has moved from where neutral was on shifter now the task of reading on how to adjust cables then back to the lake fingers crossed thanks fastjeff
