" Hello,

I'm new to the board and was wondering if someone could help me with a problem.
I have a 1994 25 HP Mariner that I just recently purchased. It will not go into reverse. The handle will go from start to forward. However, I cannot get the handle to go into reverse. It seems like somethings keeping the handle from moving into reverse. I checked the linkage several times but cannot find the cause.

Any ideals?

Thanks,
Gearld "

"Gearld... The Mariner engine

"Gearld... The Mariner engine is not my line of expertise, but if you're trying to shift into a gear with the engine NOT RUNNING, you will need to spin the prop in order to have it engage. properly.

If you're encoultering some other type problem, hopefully someone else will jump in her to address the problem.

" Gearld,
In addition to what

" Gearld,
In addition to what Joe said, if you are using the engine with a remote control box, take it apart and check if the ball bearing which rides the handle hub is still in place. It is held in place with a retainer. If it is out of place, you will need to replace it in the spring behind the retainer. If that turns out to be the problem, you will need to adjust the gear linkage so that the handle won't go far enough in either direction to upset the bearing. "

" Thanks, for the quick reply

" Thanks, for the quick reply guys. I also tried turning the handle into reverse with the motor running but no luck. I also tried turning the prop while trying to turn the handle to reverse without it running of cores. It just seems like something is stopping the handle from twisting into reverse. It never even tries to engage reverse. The handle will not go from stop to reverse. Like a reverse lock is on. Is there such a thing? I apologize for the lack of knowledge, I really need to buy a manual. I did take the handle off and everything seems to be in place. I also dis-connected a piece of the linkage to see if the handle would go into reverse and it did. So I beleive the problem is after the handle. Is there anything else I can look at before I take it into a shop?

Thanks,
Gearld "

" Gearld,
Sad to say, the pro

" Gearld,
Sad to say, the problem is probably with the clutch dog in the gear case. If you are mechanically inclined, you can get a repair manual and do the work yourself. Seloc brand is a good manual and you can get it from MarineEngine.com
Good luck and let us know the results on another post.
