reverse problem

I have a 1996 Johnson 112hp outboard. Boat will not engage in reverse. Worked on it yesterday. A lot of tension on trying to put into reverse. Also propeller is not free spinning while not running.

Drain the oil first.---Propeller must be turned when shifting or the motor must be running.----Was lower unit off for water pump work.----Any damage on the nose of the gearcase ?

Welcome. If you disconnect the shift cable at the starboard side there, inside the motor cowling, can you then shift it okay directly at the linkage? Turn prop slowly with your foot to help shift mechanism. Then report back. Sometimes the problem is simply with the control or shifting cable itself. This will help you determine the source of the problem. Was it okay before you stored it for the winter? Is it a saltwater motor?

Bought it in February. Guy started it in his yard and everything was working fine. It is a saltwater motor. I've already had to replace battery , starter cylinoid and gas line.

Sorry----It is up to you to do a bit of trouble shooting / investigation.-----Saying that it has a new battery does not help with the shifting problem.----Answers to our questions may help in sorting this out very quickly !!

Maybe the lower unit is full of water / rust ?----I can't tell from here.------Stop spending beer tokes until after you have done a complete inspection of everything.----Start with posting the results of a compression test.----These motors are famous for broken piston rings !
