reverse not working

Hi I am a new member.
I have a 1987 bayliner Capri cuddy cabin with a cobra stern outdrive attached to this the four cylinder inline 6cylinder eng.
Problem
My reverse is not working
Symptoms.. When the eng is running and I try to put in reverse from neutral..I get a sound like a clanging bell.. But it will not go into reverse. When the eng is off. I can put into rev.(tested at the prop).

I have changed the lower unit oil. It was the color of army green.

Question..Does this mean I need to repair the gears or is there an adjustment that ai can do?

I know this is just a start. I would appreciate any help or advice you can give. I am confident I can do the work necessary with direction

Keep bumping this thread the black gearbox guys will be able to help you out! Were there any metal shavings or water in the gearoil?

Take the drive off and put it on the scrap pile. Forget about fixing it. Go to the Sterndrive Engineering web page and get the replacement bell housing for the transom assembly and convert it to a gen2 alpha........Problem solved. Do this upgrade and you will have a reliable boat again.

1987 Bayliners with I/O's were OMC.
The OMC in those days was the Dog Clutch Cobra.
