Reverse Gear Slippage 2006 6.1 L

I have a Mercruiser 6.1 Horizon Bravo 3 drive ( 2006 ). I recently had removed the lower unit to check gimble bearing because I thought I heard a noise coming from the back of the engine during fresh water flush. they inspected it and no problems. Just this weekend my reverse started to delay until I would give it a little more gas and then sometimes a small bang into gear. My forward gear works smooth.
Could this have anything to do with my service checking the gimble bearing?

Re: Reverse Gear Slippage

Most likely a cable adjustment. That bravo needs a special alignment tool (plastic) to set the cable at the shift bracket.

I would start there.

They could have put it in forward gear (which is neccesary for alpha's) and stretch the cable or it could just be cooinsendence.....

Re: Reverse Gear Slippage

forward is good you say . Wait to the end of the season then go after the problem.

Damn your too far away or i would tell you to bring it to BT Doctur , then i would come over also to his place. I don't charge but he does.

Re: Reverse Gear Slippage

So my marina has told me that is was the clutch cone assembly and that I needed to replace it. They said it was not cracked just worn.

What is the life span on these. I have haf two other Formulas with Mercruiser engines for 12 - 13 years each and never came upon this. This boat is shy of 5 years. I saw articles on the correct gear lube and I always use the right quicksilver lube and make sure the reserve bottle is at full level. Any insight would be helpful.

Re: Reverse Gear Slippage

It sounds unlikely that a 4 year old boat would need a cone clutch assembly.

How many hours on on it?

If it is in excess of 500 -800 then maybe...........And I say MAYBE!!

Also you need to ask if the cone clutch assembly in your outdrive is the current rev.

If it is not this will cost in excess of $1500 for parts alone......the latest rev forces the entire assembly to be replaced.

The dealer will have that info based on the outdrive serial number.

Last year I did a 1987 bravo one and there was no replacement of just the worn parts, Needed to replaced everything....................

Also make sure the link arm that goes thru the upper housing ( forward to aft) is in PERFECT shape as this will also greatly influence the shifting!!

If the pivot points are worn or corroded it will make shifting tough.
