reverse adjustment

How do I adjust my reverse control lever? When I put my 35 mercury in reverse it will back up real slow and the further you move the lever it sounds like its trying to go into gear.

I believe this should be a cable adjustment at the motor. Adjust the barrels so it is able to change into all gears.
