"Last fall I was having trouble shifting into reverse. Started out with a chatter and progressed until the last 5-6 times out I just didn't use it. Over the winter[30BELOW ZERO SOME DAYS] I stumbled on this amazing forum and read it every day.I feel as if I know JWB, Morton, Charles, Jamie and David along with a host of others personally.Anyway, yesterday I started getting things in order[heard water temp hit 40] I changed plugs, put in fresh gas put on the muffs and fired her up. Firt crank and she was purring. Put in in foward and slid in ,put in neutral slid in, put in reverse-grind! I've been paying attension so I took off cables and could shift easily into all gears. Adjusted the cable on shifter from almost all out to the middle were it fit with the control in neutral. Fired her up and chatter trying to put in reverse.Noticed that the bracket that holds the cable end was cocked at an angle. Found that the rod that goes to the clevis for the shift rod would move 3/4in. or more and bracket was contacting throttle bracket and other things when pushed in reverse, but wouldn't when being pulled into forward. Took off air silencer and base thinking I could get to the clevis to see what was going on, Stupid me!However, I did get a wrench on the top clevis nut and loosened it. The rod did slide over and I got it tightened back up. Fired her up and SMOOTH SHIFTING. Then I took her to a close lake for a test run, slid her in the water fired her up shifted to reverse and nothing but chatter! Haven't had time to do any more but wondered what anyone else's thoughts are on this. Thanks!"

"sounds like you have done som

"sounds like you have done some homework

as long as your linkage is set properly,i am thinking the dogs on your rev... gear are rounded off causing it to slip .
to make sure you will have to pull the lower unit
and dismantle the gearcase /replace the rev...gear.////all seals tooo"

"i just wanted to when it is not in the water ,there is no load on the engine/gears.
you say ,got to lake (it did not work in the water)///no load...
also not good to put in gear out of water."

"Thanks, I was thinking obout

"Thanks, I was thinking obout that today and was wondering about whether there was a load on the prop when in the water vs out. I have another question. When dropping the LU can it be done when engine is tilted up? If not how do you get it off? Lower the tongue and jack up the rear of the boat? Haven't ever taken off a LU but someone told me that you had to have it vertical to get shiftrod and drive shaft lined properly to reassemble. Is this true?"

"you can do it tilted, have som

"you can do it tilted, have some extra hands around,do you have a book, that is a little too much to typ in."

"Have a Clymer, pretty much worthless for LU. Will get original before attempting. May just remove and take LU to my mechanic and have him do it. And then reinstall. Thanks again for the advice. I really appreciate not only the advice but also the promtness with which I recieved it."
