Reuse Broken Starter Spring? 15hp

Hi folks, I realize a replacement starter spring is relatively inexpensive, but do you think it's possible to reuse a spring where the stopper coil on the outside of the spring cup broke? Do you think it's possible to wind up the end to make a new stopper coil? 1985 15hp Evinrude.

Also please confirm 5/32" is the correct thickness for replacement starter rope.

Also, service manual says to use OMC Triple Guard Grease in the spring cup, but a video I watched said you shouldn't use grease because it will get old and sticky, which is correct?

No once its broke it is broke. Replace the spring or become an expert on removing the the recoil every time the used spring breaks again.

5/32" is correct. I would lightly grease it. but with a less sticky grease than Triple Guard. Just my way, I guess.

Not sure how long it will last but I had a busted end on my 78 Johnson 9.9 and heated it to put a new bend on it. so far so good. Havent ordered a new spring yet but probably should so I have it on hand

I have annealed and rebent lots of starter springs in my day. Mostly in cases where replacements simply were not available. I would say that the success rate....well it depends. Whatever that means.

Probably only a dozen or so starts with it so far and l will order a new one but I wanted to use it and thought it was worth a try. I have a starter rope with if needed.
