"I have a 3.0 and in 2004 the motor hydrolocked and cracked the #2 cylinder and broke a rod. My question is, should I have the block resleeved and new rods and pistons installed or should I just buy a new longblock. I found some longblocks for just under $2000. I am not sure how much the resleeving will be or which one would be better.
Thanks,
Rolland"

"Welcome Rolland:

Sounds like you had some bad luck. The pressure created by the hydrolock cracked the sleeve. That energy was transferred to the block to allow the crack in the sleeve. I would be concerned about damage to the block casting. Fine cracking can only be found by having the block magnafluxed. By the time you do that you are into alot of labor cost. Unless you do the labor the cost of repairing your engine becomes a reman. cost.

You could just tell them to resleeve, reassemble it and hope that's all you need. On the other hand, buying a QUALITY longblock from a known rebuilder or a new Lblock SHOULD give you new life for a long time. In my case, money and quality are siamese twins."

I have a 3.0 L block fully machined ready to ship. E-mail your location and I give you the total cost.

FWIW, I rebuilt my 3.0 last summer due to a water ingestion problem. By the time the smoke cleared for testing, resurfacing, boring and grinding along with Gasket sets and internal parts, the cost was around $1900 Canadian. I then had to assemble the thing.
In the future I will go with the Long/Short Block rebuilds.

"My vote: Long Block.

When i had a car garage, we would do north of 10 cars a day and RARELY get inside lower ends and transmissions. Out with the old, in with the new, bolt everything up and the customer is gone in a day and happy.

Same theory here. There are people who do reman work day in and day out with consistant results and warranties."

"I found new long blocks for under $2000. I might go with them. Just to be on the safe side. All I would have to do is remove the old, and install the new. I do have to wait for my birth day the wife said and that is a ways off."
