"I have a 73 galaxie tri-hull 15' it has a 77 evinrude 70 2cycle, I am thinking of getting a new engine, the max recommended power is 85hp, would this be different with newer lighter motors? Would like to put a 4stroke 90-115hp on it they both weigh the same. As far as the motor i have, I have no clue what it weighs. What should I look out for, and are the benefits of a 4stroke worth the extra cost? Any info on this subject is appreciated. Shawn"

"Shawn,

I don't have the specs in front of me, but I can't imagine a 115 four stroke weighing the same as a 2 stroke 70. If my memory serves me your 3 cyl weighs about 225 lbs.

The CG recommendations are not solely based on engine weight, in fact they're not based on weight at all.

Your 70 in today's rated hp is equal to about 60 hp, less 30 years of wear, probably more like 50 hp.

I would make sure the transom integrity was ample to handle the added hp, then I would still not exceed the rating.

I would also think strongly about upgrading the whole package. You will have difficulty insuring a '73 boat and I would not put a new, expensive engine on it without insurance, and you may get nice "previously enjoyed" rig for less than the price of that new motor. Just my opinion...

"Shawn, I do agree with Rick t

"Shawn, I do agree with Rick that you certainly do not want to exceed your max hp recomendation. You may "think" that your boat can handle 100 horses, but if that was the case it would be "rated" for it. They don't just pick a number out of the air and stick it on the boat.

As to a 4 stroke, what are hoping to get out of the engine? If you were even considering a massive horsepower increase it sounds more like you are looking for more speed out of your rig.

A 2 stroke is way faster out of the blocks than a 4 will ever be, but the 4 stroke will idle alot nicer, give you better bottom end torque.

Your motor should fit your application. Use your boat to pull a skier or tube, get an ETEC 2 stroke - use it fishing with downriggers and don't have a kicker - get a 4 stroke.

Do your homework. How you use your boat = what's the best engine.

But don't exceed your max hp rating. If you did and something happened, that could be construed as "neglagence" on your part..."

I'm not 100% sure but it may even be against the law to exceed manufacturers ratings. If you ever were involved in some type of accident you would likely face fines and certainly have trouble collecting insurance. But bottom line is the safety of you and your passengers... enjoy boating responsibly and safely.

"Thanks for the responses, very helpful. Those were my thoughts as well. Probably would never have bought the new engine, just curiosity."
