I'm have an opportunity to purchase a new mercrusier 330 HP sterndrive carborated engine at a steal of a price. What are some of the pros and cons of going with a carb engine and a Fuel Injected ?

carb version seems a bit simpler of an engine, less things to go wrong .

First, what are you going to do with it? Replacing another 7.4 L Bravo drive? Are you replacing the engine only, and on what drive system (Alpha or Bravo)? What size boat? What's in it now? Need more info to see if it's even a viable project.

What's the the engine you're looking to replace?
What's the boat?
What kind of boating do you do (cruising/fishing/skiing, etc.)?
What are you looking to accomplish?

I belive the engine my mechanic had in mined was a 383 Stroker , not 100% sure we talked lots of engines and deals.

replacing engine and gimble/transom assembly only. The Bravo 1 outdrive is new , about 15 hours.

The boat is a Proline model 2610, 1998. We boat in the N.E from May-Nov, mostly inshore fishng, beach trips and anchorages, never more then 10 miles from home. No water sports at all. We cruise the boat now at 3500 rpms( 23 knots) WOT 4500 rpms ( 32 knots)

My mechanic said for my use the carb is fine, less complexted engine easier repairs.

thanks

So your mechanic is telling you the engine in the boat (the 383?) is shot?
Based on what?

You're #1 concern - you're in salt and brackish water. Regardless of what engine you go with make sure you fit it with a closed cooling system.

For what you're doing the carb'd engine will be just fine. Fished the Gulf of Maine for 3 years on a 5.7L with a 2bbl mercarb. Never had a problem with the carb until I moved it to Virginia and the ethanol gas soaked up the southern humidity and gummed her up a bit. Once cleaned, and I got religous about fuel stabilizer, never had another problem.
Fuel injection has its benifts too.. better economy, easier starting cold and reliability.
Most of the problems I hear about folks encountering stem for somebody monkeying with it that didn't know what they were doing... that stands true for carbs as well.
