Replacing waterpump in 40 hp

I have a 1975 40EL75C and tryi

I have a 1975 40EL75C and trying to replace the waterpump. I can't figure out where to disconnect the shift rod. Everything else is loose. Any suggestions?

Do you see an oval side plate

Do you see an oval side plate on the Left side of the exhaust housing? It's where you would gain access to disconnect the shift rod connector.
