Replacing Water Pump Question

Hi all,
I am new to the forum and have a hopfully simple question. I have a 2002 Mercury 75 hp 2 Stroke outboard. I bought it used and had no idea when the water pump was replaced last. I puchased the total pump repair kit with housing. After putting it back together I noticed that it does not include a "slinger ring". The dealer said if its not in the box then it doesn't need one. I don't believe it had one to begin with but I'm not sure. After putting it back together and putting the water to it, i had ok flow on the water outlet, but I also had water coming out around the sacrificial anode, which I dont remember it coming from before.
So my questions are, should there be a slinger ring? and should water be coming out from around the anode?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Good idea to use the old ring, or make one from some hose--keeps dirt out of the water pump.

Water comes out all kinds of weird places. Long as it's pumping water you should be okay.
