Replacing sterndrive myself

I have a 1987 alpha one gen one. 3.0 liter with 1.98 gears. The upper gears shredded on this unit so I plan on replacing the entire unit. I have located a 2.5 liter drive with the same gears and year.
My question is will I be able to use this drive as a replacement? The only difference I've noticed is the gear selector switch turns the opposite direction as mine. Will the gear selector linkage still be able to work on this unit? What would I need to do to make it work?

What would I need to do to make it work? Find out why the replacement one goes in the opposite direction
 
I could be mistaken, but I think you could lift the little brass foot up, & out, then put it back in facing the direction it needs to be.

I was thinking that these two answers are contradicting. Could you explain?

All alpha one and earlier all shift the same way........

If your replacement 2.5 outdrive is not a mercruiser than it wont work..........
