Replacing Needle Bearings in 280 Outdrive

Hi,
Just wanted to know if anyone has experience in changing out the old style needle bearings (metal cage) with the newer plastic style on the gearshaft?
Is the spacer ring in between the two metal bearings discarded and all the other components installed? Seems logical, but just wanted to know if there was anything to watch out for.

You've probably answered your own question by now, by comparing the height of the two new bearings against that of the two all metal caged bearings and spacer.
