Replacing Impeller 2006 90 hp

I have a 2006 90hp 2 stroke Mercury. Does the motor need to be in neutral or forward before I remove the lower unit?

neutral. then when reinstalling, put the lower unit in reverse, turn the prop to line the driveshaft splines back up, then drop unit slightly, and put it back in neutral, then stick it back up and you are good to go.
