I'm wanting to replace all

I'm wanting to replace all of my hoses on the closed coolant side on my 1999 454. I am wondering how to do it to minimize spilling antifreeze? Also what is the correct way to properly dispose of old coolant. thanks

I will be doing this shorty and in on water.

I would like to hear sujestion too, as I'm thinking funnals and tubes. I use a big beer bong for gas up and thinking same but to use buckets too for removal.

If on land I would think to divert streams with funnels into bilge and catch with bucket at drain plug hole.

It will not be so easy for me in water this winter.

I hope to catch all!"

"I've used Scott's met

"I've used Scott's method, but found a smaller funnel easier to manipulate in the confined spaces. Should be a block drain on each side and the manifolds should have them, too. The big hose, from the HX to the circulating pump, is the 'messy one'. Last time, used a gallon sized bucket and pulled the raw water pump out of the way. If there is an easier way to do this one, I'm all ears.

Mercrusier offers blue plastic pipe plugs that are supposed to be "hand tighten only" and comme with a drain fitting. They were coming out when I left the shop so haven't tried them.

As far as disposal, you can take it to your county landfill, at least around here. Also, most marinas will handle it. I usually have leftover RV antifreeze jugs from winterizing. They work great for this ap."

"I.m out of the water- but I d

"I.m out of the water- but I dont want to intentionally dump it in the bilge, although I know its going to be a mess. Where are the drain plugs? how much coolant is in one of these things? I'm going to drain into a bucket, lots of towels ect-- I'm not looking forward to this task. My boat is a '99 with orginal hoses they look fine but I would rather be proactive at 11 years old, sometimes I think I look too hard for things to do one this boat-regards dave"

my 454CID takes 33 qts (12

my 454CID takes 33 qts (125 L). if you are at a marina make sure you have "water on" and your hose is long enough. no matter what you will want to flush the bilge.

"The manifold plugs are usuall

"The manifold plugs are usually at the back/bottom, the lowest point for draining.

The block plugs are down at the freeze plug level, about midway between the flywheel and the balancer.

I remember the HX has two, one for raw water and the other is coolant (i think). Pulling the big hose going to the circulating pump all be eliminates the need to pull that one.

If you reinstall the metal pipe plugs, use a good thread sealant with teflon. Usually a full turn past finger tight is adequate."
