Replacing forward gear on 115 94 Mercury

"Just wondering,can I replace

"Just wondering,can I replace the forward gear without replacing the pinion gear.
Trying to omit doing all the backlash.
(Didnt know if they have to be replaced at the same time due to wear like bearings and races)

Any help would be great

Mike they come individualy but

Mike they come individualy but if you have taken a tooth off fwd i can bet the pinion is cracked and will fail in a short period of time...change them all and yes the gear box lash will have to be set up again

"Why did it fail in the first place? Could be that gear is engaged "softly". It needs to be engaged with a solid movement to prevent this wear.

Is the spring still tight? Store this motor in FWD gear when not in use and spring will last a lifetime.

It will make a nice "clunk" sound, but that's normal.

As Jamie said, consider replacing them as a set."
