Replacing Control Cables 1973 50hp Johnson

I ran into problems when installing new control cables. I recently bought a 73' 50hp Johnson with remote control but the cables were missing. I had an old set of cables that went to the exact same motor but the cables were shot,so I purchased a set of new {pre-79' UFLEX C4} cables and installed to my remote box using the connectors from the old cables, when I went to install on the motor it was obviouse that the fit was'nt right, the connector guides seemed too long even after setting the cable adjustment to the shortest setting they barely fit into the cable holder and leaves no room for adjustment without affecting the idle speed /idle return and also prevents full throttle range. I suppose my question is 1} Did I install them correctly 2} Is this the correct Cable, what's the difference between pre79' and others 3} Is there an connector adapter kit that uses shorter guides that would give proper range of adjustment I THANK YOU in advance for suggestions and advice!! Very frustrating thinking the only thing stopping me from having my boat in water is a set of cables!! Thanks again, I know this is the best place to come for getting problems solved!

Did you buy factory new cables ?-----Or some other source that said they would fit.----Part numbers of the cbles you have.----Have never had issues with factory parts.

To Racerone, In Hopes that you will accept my most sincere apology for my delay in responding back. I had unexpected family matters that demanded my attention and did'nt allow me to respond until now. Your offering of help and advice and personal time is greatly appreciated, beyond words. The contributions that you and many others so selflessly give is held with the highest respect by all of those that you help, we Thank You!! I'm Sorry, I realize that I'm off subject and the purpose of this forum. Getting back to the topic. Yes,they were new factory cables which are UFLEX-brand. C4-model# *{pre79' OMC Evinrude/Johnson features3.1" stroke} made in USA. Iwould agree with you on ruling out the cables! So next immediatly after posting the original thread I went back to recheck my work, this time with an original1973 service manual that my brother brought over to me. I realized 2 mistakes right away. My first was I failed to remove the " backlash" in my cables, and secondly, the warm-up lever adjustment screw on the control box needed to be reset to the proper position, I believe it was so far advanced that it opened the nuetral start circuit and therefore preventing the starter to crank. With those corrections made I was able to install the cables on the motor. The idle screw required a slight adjustment to maintain it's contact with the stop. With cables installed I then checked that the box shifted correctly and worked in all posistions, the next step was starting the motor and setting timing and idle speed, so far all seems good and the remaining task is to take to the water for test run and set full speed timing. Things I learned : 1.} Have a proper manual and follow it's instructions 2.} Double check your work 3.} Finally if you get stuck, make sure you have followed steps 1 & 2 completely before you ask for help it's possible you might have the answer in front of you Again racerone, I THANK YOU!! for your quick response and being ready and willing to help!!
