Replacing a 280 DP with a 290A DP

Hello, my boat has a single AQAD40B diesel and a 280DP, my boat is 25 years old and has spent it`s entire life in the water and has only been pulled for maintenance and repairs. My current 280 is starting to show the signs of sitting in saltwater for over a quarter of a century , and yesterday I notice corrosion around the compression fitting on the gear cable sleeve that attaches to the transom shield and am thinking maybe it`s time to replace the 280

Around 12 months ago I was able to purchase at a good price a mint condition, fully rebuilt by VP, 290A DP with a 2.3:1 that came off a trailer boat.

My Questions are, A: To remove the 280 and replace it with a 290 does the engine have to come out? if so why? B: I`m unsure of my current radio (maybe 1.95:1) is there any issues with a ratio change? I understand I may have to change prop size. C: What do I have to lookout for / take into consideration while doing the changeover?

Thanks for your help, cheers Ian ( In Australia, so parts are hard to come by, and expensive when you do)

DO NOT attempt to remove this fitting! The sealing washer is on the interior side of the threads, exposing the threads to corrosion.

Instead, chisel the rusting sleeve away, and remove the rubber sheathe (actually just a rubber hose).
Cut 1" from the sheathe, and re-install on the fitting.
In lieu of the crimp sleeve, you'll now use a properly sized Euro band clamp.

NOTE: the 2.30:1 ratio gear set is not as strong as the taller ratio gear sets.

My Questions are,
A: To remove the 280 and replace it with a 290 does the engine have to come out? if so why?
How much of the 280 will you be replacing?

B: I`m unsure of my current ratio (maybe 1.95:1) is there any issues with a ratio change? I understand I may have to change prop size.
There is no substitute for a correct ratio per engine.

C: What do I have to lookout for / take into consideration while doing the changeover?
Again... how much of the 280 are you wanting to replace?
Just the drive portion.... or the entire drive.... transom shield included????

Hello Ricardo, thank you very much for your reply, I really appreciate your help, to reply to your question,

Q: How much of the 280 will you be replacing?

A: I was thinking of replacing the entire drive, transom shield, everything from the 280 out, and everything from the 290 in

Cheers Ian

If replacing the entire drive, you'll have better access to everything if the engine is removed.
The structural transom will require a small amount of modification for the 290 transom shield.
You'll want to replace at minimum the interior side large rubber cushion. (this cushion provides the water seal)
You'll also want to go through the "one time" triangulation engine alignment once the engine is placed back into the hull.

Also..... and very important..... replace the PDS bearings/seals while you have this all apart.
