Replacement Propeller for 1977 500

I am considering replacing my aluminum replacement prop with a stainless steel. The reason is, I have been told that a stainless steel prop can give you a couple more MPH. Don't know if that's true but hoping for advise from this forum. I have a 1977 50 HP Mercury 500. What is the correct size and pitch, and is it worth the money to replace aluminum with SS?

Step # 1 is to determine condition of the motor.----Post the actual compression values here.----What RPM and with what pitch prop are you running now?----A good sales pitch ,might entice you to part with beer tokens with the promise of extra speed.----What boat ?

The motor is in great shape and runs terrific. Excellent compression, though I do not remember numbers, it has been several months since last tune up. I have a 1977 15' Fiberglass Monarch, but I do not have an RPM gauge. I can get about 27 MPH when alone in the boat, but it drops substantially when someone else goes. I will get prop info. I had a SS prop but it spun and the repair service did not center it properly, and it rubs the shaft housing when it turns. The repair shop is two hours away so returning it has not been a priority. Might be my imagination, but it seems the SS got me about 29 MPH. There are so many different pitches to choose from that I'm totally confused.

Second step is buying a tach to see what rpm you are hitting; should be 5,500 or so @ full throttle; (this is on the high side which will help with weight) - setting the motor at the proper angle will help.
