"I'm trying to buy a replacement long block and want to be sure I am ordering the right one - can anyone help please? The Volvo Penta number on the plate riveted to the engine casting is CU30679 and there is another plate attached to the bell housing with PN 8506789 and Serial number 639771 8120. Can anyone confirm whether this is the 1980-84 3.8L version for which I believe the replacement is GM229LA, or a 4.3l 1985 - 86 or later? Is the Block casting number visible? If so where please?"

"AQ175A is a 3.8 / Chevrolet 229. Too bad you are way over there- I still have 1 reman short block in stock in it's OMC shipping crate.
A 4.3 wont work for you - the heads are different and your distributor (dizzy!
) is specific to the semi-even firing order of the 229."

"Thanks Hy Stat, great help.

"Thanks Hy Stat, great help. Do you know whether a more modern engine would fit the boat if I also replaced engine and leg as a combo?"

Any Chevrolet V6 or V8 will bolt up to your bellhousing and with other misc parts and lots of cash you have a good platform. Regearing your outdrive to match HP ratings will complete any repower if necessary.
Not sure about modern though. Most marine engines right up to 2008 are still pushrod V engines based on a 1950's design.
I thought the AQ175A was usually coupled to a 290 drive. Can't beat that.
A duoprop lower was even original on some 175A's
