Hi I'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone had any firsthand knowledge of 438556 model num. Sierra fuel pump mounted on a 2004 Johnson 50hp j50plsoc. I'm taking the VRO off, it's shot, and I would like the simplicity of mounting a pump directly on to the engine block. I can buy the part off this very site, and was told by a reliable source from another forum that it may very well work. Any other suggestions would be greatly apreciated too. I'm new to all of this and not very mechanicaly inclined, but I'm learnig. Thanks!

Get rid of the VRO pump--------------Block the pulse port for it.-----------Simply bolt on an older style pump.----------A pump and gasket from a " 48 special / commercial model / or pre 83 model " will work.----------------The spot to mount it is on the block.-----A wee bit of hose work to do as well.

Thanks racerone. I cant for the life of me figure out what a '48 special is, and I'm haveing trouble finding comercial pumps. Is that just like a generic brand? The pump I keep comeing up with on searches is one for years 1976-89 and for non-VRO. My engine will be non-VRO when I pull the thing out, Is that good enuff? I imagine that as long the pulse part of the pump snuggly fits inside the pulse hole it will work fine. It's supposed to work on a 50hp. My engine is a 2004 with a 2005 model number, will that pulse hole on the side of the engine block be the same size as ealier years? I'm half tempted just to take the risk, order one , and hope it fits. Thanks for all your help!

Simply go to -------shop.evinrude.com-----------Look up a later model 48 HP motor fuel pump.--------------Buy the fuel pump / gasket / 2 screws and filter cover if need be.--------------Throw the VRO pump away.-----------------Plug the VRO pulse port.-----------------Look at the side of top cylinder ( port side ) of your motor.-------------Remove pulse port plug and bolt on the pump.---------------------Now fit some hoses !
