Replaced gears. Still slipping

Hello all. I have a 72 Johnson long shaft 25hp. It started slipping out of forward gear. So I replaced the forward gear and clutch dog, and it's still kicks out. Used all omc new parts. Does anyone have an idea on what else it could be? Thanks

What did the old gears and clutch dog look like ??----Did you try another prop ( rubber hub could be slipping ) on this motor ?-----Did you check linkages for looseness / proper adjustment ?-----Did you line up the notch on the shift rod with holes in the brass connecter before putting the screws in ?

Define "slipping". Do you mean slipping like spinning your car wheels on ice? Or do you mean actually kicking the gearshift to neutral, possibly slamming back into gear with a thud like you hit something? Smooth slipping like spinning your wheels is a prop hub or cavitation.

You can confirm a slipping prop hub by marking the prop and the shaft end. Running until the "trouble" occurs then checking the marks.

it is kicking into natural. The gears and dog weren't bad had some scoring. It's a pin drive It had a 9 by 8 prop on there I went back to original 9 by 10 kicked out of gear on both . I'm not sure how to adjust linkage or if u can?it's the split linkage with 2 screws. I took it apart in reverse and put it back together in reverse. So I could connect the top screw for linkage. I dont think it's in the gears. Is there a linkage adjustment on the split version. Sorry dont know what it's called. Thank u

So you replaced the forward gear and clutch dog and it's still jumping out of gear? There is something grossly wrong there, and I'd say it is more than adjustment. Were those new parts that you put in?

If you have this type of connector between the upper and lower shift rods ( it seems to be what you are describing)

You must make sure that the shift rods are fully inserted so that clamping screws are positioned behind the heads on the ends of the shift rods.
Your symptoms suggest that one of the shift rods was not fully inserted before the clamp screw was refitted

^^^^ with the above.----And there is an adjustment at the top where the shift handlle is.------Look for it as it is there !!

Yes I put in all new parts. Yes that is the connector that I have. I removed both screws not realizing I only need to remove the top screw to drop lower unit. I know the top screw was fully inserted but I dont think I fully inserted the bottom screw. The shifter on the side of the motor if fully engaged into the forward position then goes to neutral fine as well as reverse. I'll make sure that connector is in all the way and test again thank u for helping so far

Is my shifter lock screw where my adjustments can be made? Part # 0322781. I replaced the shifter lock spring 0302587 thanks again

There is NO ADJUSTMENT at the brass connecter.----Notches on the rods must be lined up with the holes before screws are put in.---And no 322781 is not a shift adjustment screw.------It is right on the shift handle , just look for it !!

Racer,I'm sorry but the screw on the shift handle only adjust the handle. My guess is,replacing the shift lock #317757 will solve the problem assuming the upper shift linkage is not wore out.

Sorry ,----317757 will not solve your problem.-----Blunt statement is ---You need to look at this carefully to see how this works !!

Alright so I took apart the connector between the shift rods and the bottom half was in the top half. I separated them and screwed them down tested in the tank and it didnt kick out of gear! Going to test on lake 2moro under full throttle. I put it in forward then adjusted it. It seemed to work, but I want to play with that some more so I really understand how it works. Thanks again

Made it about 100 yards b4 it kicked out of gear. I had it adjusted as far forward as it would go. I took the screw star/spline washer and nut off and star/spline washer part # 0303480 looked like all the ends have grinded off and theres a lot of scoring on the adjuster. Is that washer suppose to keep the adjustment u make from moving on the ears of the adjuster? Thank u
