I have burnt a hole in the top piston .The shop I took it to gave me a price to repair it that was more than I could ever afford. My question is can this job be done at home with the aid of a manual? or is it to complex for someone with basic engine repair skills.I would love to hear from anyone who has done this before.

" John, even with good mechanical skills this is a complex and time consuming job. Unless you have access to the correct tools, I would let the pro do it.

In order to save money I would suggest tearing the engine down yourself, this is where a manual would come in handy. Once you have the engine apart, take the block in to the shop to be bored and honed and have the cylinder head checked and resurfaced, a good machine shop will tell you what needs to be done.

Have them complete the assembly of the power head, including a new piston etc and using the manual you should be able to reassemble the rest yourself, take your time and follow the manual. "
