Been there/done that, and more than once using the AQ series Volvo Penta drive.
If AQ series, you'll need a template for the transom cut-out.... and of course all of the Volvo Penta parts.

Can you be more specific?
Which Volvo Penta drive, and what engine will this be installed behind?
Wtih the GM V-8's there may be an issue wth the flywheel size if this is an AQ series drive.
No big deal, it's simple change of the flywheel and starter motor.

I am removing an outdrive for a 4.3 merc and have a AQ140 with 280 outdrive

OK.... if you have an entire Volvo Penta package, this will be very easy.

No flywheel issues as though you were re-using a Mer SBC V-8.

If you can get your hands on the fiberglass transom portion of the donor boat, this can be your template.
The boat's transom must be stout, as some of the AQ 140's were cantilever hung.
No fears.... this works just fine.

There will be some Do's/Dont's.... so ask questions as you go along.

BTW, your throttle and shift cables will now change to the 33C style.
The shift cable will now be one cable rather than two cables used with the Merc.
No more SA (shift assist) to deal with, and no more dog clutch gear engagement.

Hey Rick long time no see,

BoaterTed Rick is correct.many many advantages to dropping the alpha drive and step up to the Volvo!! I have owned Volvo for 10 Years with ZERO drive issues. Started with a 270 and now i have a DP-C. Awesome DYI set up for maintenance and bellows/u joint. Wish you the best of luck with your project and hope your on the water soon!!!
